American Sign Language Classes

  • Spring 2020 ASL Class Information 


    This spring, an ASL level 1 beginner class will be offered. The class objective is to provide a working knowledge of American Sign Language and to offer an introduction to Deaf culture.

    Classes are offered for 8 Saturday mornings from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on AASD's campus. 

    All attendees must be 15 years of age or older.  

    Payment and Registration:

    Families of students at AASD, GSD and GA PINES pay a $40.00 deposit to register. If at least 6 of the 8 class sessions are attended, the deposit will be refunded in full. No partial refunds will be given.

    For community members the cost is $80.00 and is non-refundable. Although our first priority is teaching AASD/GSD/GA PINES students’ family members, additional spots are often available for members of the community on a first come, first serve basis.

    There is no childcare provided. Children are not permitted in the adult classes.

    Class capacity is limited. Classes are filled on a first come first serve basis.

    Registration forms will be accepted until Friday, January 17th.

    Class begins Saturday, January 25 and meet each Saturday until through the end of March. No  classes will be held on Saturday, February 15 and Saturday, March 14 due to school holidays.

    Classes are held at the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf, 890 N. Indian Creek Drive, Clarkston, GA 30021. 

    Families: Please pay your deposit with cash or blank money orders for easy refunds.

    Community members: Checks, money order or cash are accepted. Checks may be payable to AASD.

  • What level are these classes?
    We offer three basic level classes. Students will be together for the first day of class, then separated according to ability.  The class objective is to provide a working knowledge of American Sign Language and to offer an introduction to Deaf culture.

    Are classes only available on Saturday mornings at AASD?
    We would like to offer classes in satellite locations if there is enough interest. We welcome your input and suggestions. Please contact Patti Lombardi to discuss this further at plombardi@doe.k12.ga.us.

    Who are the instructors?
    Classes are taught by certified teachers of American Sign Language who are staff members at AASD.  

    How is the cost calculated?
    For families of students at AASD, GSD and GA PINES a $40.00 deposit is required to register. Children in the sibling classes can register for a $30 deposit. If at least 6 of the 8 class sessions are attended the deposit will be refunded in full. No partial refunds will be given.

    How does the child care work?
    Child care must be requested at least 3 days in advance. This means we must receive a call or email detailing how many children will be attending by the Wednesday before each Saturday class. The cost is $5.00 per child per session.
