Welcome to the AASD Library

  • The AASD library is available from 7:30-3:30 every day.  Both staff and students may check out books during these hours. Families are also allowed to check out books. 

    The AASD Library serves students who are 3 through age 22.  Therefore, it is very similar to a small public library with books and resources for all types of learners. We do our best to help match readers with the best books for them but want you to be aware of all of the types of books that we provide:

    • Fiction Picture and Board Books- these are for all students who love stories!
    • Middle Grade Fiction- these are chapter books and novels for students who are ready for longer stories. Some popular middle grade fiction books are Harry Potter, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and the I Survived Series.
    • Graphic Novels- these are both fiction and non-fiction books that include comic style illustrations. These are our most popular books!  This section includes Amulet, Smile, and Black Panther.
    • Non-fiction, biography and Deaf Studies- this section has everything from basic animal books to in depth US history! Our students love learning and researching topics such as dinosaurs, pets, transportation, sports, and more! This section includes books on mature topics, such as abortion, the holocaust, slavery, and drug addiction.  
    • Young Adult Fiction- young adult (YA) fiction refers to books that are considered appropriate for ages 12-18. This includes books such as The Hate U Give and Hunger Games. These may include mature themes and language, such as sexual assault, teen pregnancy, and cussing.
    • Teen Graphic Novels- these are YA graphic novels that are aimed at students aged 12-18. This includes graphic novels such as Magic Fish and Maus. These may include mature images, language, and themes, such as depictions of sexual assault, alcohol usage, and cussing.

    We respect your role as guardian of your child and want you to be informed about the books available to them.  We encourage families to speak to their child about what books they read, as well as to read with your child. If you wish your child to not have access to Teen Graphic novels, Young Adult Fiction books, or any other type of library material, please contact your child's case manager.

  • AASD Request for Reconsideration

    Request for Reconsideration: If a staff, student, or family member has a concern about any material in the library, they may fill out a Request for Reconsideration Form found on the library's webpage and follow the directions for submitting the Request for Reconsideration form.  A Request for Reconsideration Committee, made up stakeholders from AASD and the Georgia Department of Education, will meet to review, research, and read the material in question.  The committee will then make a determination of how to handle the material.  The complainant will be informed of the committee’s decision.  If the complainant is not satisfied with the decision, they may appeal to the State Schools Chief Policy Officer regarding the Request for Reconsideration Committee's decision.
