Nutrition and Food Science

😊 Welcome from Ms. Andrea Alston - Nutrition and Food Science Pathway Instructor ðŸ˜Š

I’m thrilled to welcome your child into my classroom! I am a proud educator of the Nutrition and Food Science Pathway and have been teaching since 2011. I’m passionate about preparing students with essential life skills that will empower them both now and in the future.

I was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia, and became Deaf at five months old after contracting meningitis. I attended mainstream schools throughout my early education and later enrolled at Gallaudet University in the summer of 2002. There, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Family and Child Studies in 2007, followed by a Master of Arts in Deaf Education in 2011.

During my time at Gallaudet, I embraced my Deaf identity and learned deeply about Deaf Culture and my intersectional experiences. This journey shaped who I am today—both personally and professionally—and gave me the strength and insight to thrive and lead others.

My passion for giving back to the Deaf community inspired me to become a Deaf Educator. I strive to teach Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students that they can achieve success in life through confidence, life skills, and career readiness. Our curriculum includes:

  • Nutrition and Wellness
  • Financial Literacy
  • Child Development
  • Career Readiness
  • Interactive Lessons- Cooking labs, budgeting simulations, nutrition projects, and more.
  • Skill Development- Communication, problem-solving, time management, and teamwork.
  • Community Connection- Career exploration and service-learning projects that connect students with real-world experiences.

Additionally, at the End of the Pathway Assessment (EOPA), participants have the opportunity to take the ServeSafe Food Handler course, a great way to earn a certificate that can help them begin a career in the food service industry.

Once again, welcome to the Nutrition and Food Science Program. Let’s make this an inspiring and successful journey together!
